Since the Bangkok YMCA Foundation had operated the Protect A Child
Program in Ampur Dokkamtai Phayao Province, we have found in many
villages in the hilltribe and lowland, a lot of children who are suffering
from lack of proper care physically, mentally, spiritually and socially.
In Dokkamtai, there are approximately 73,000 inhabitants. Most of
the people are farmers. During the planting and harvesting season,
they have to work in the field all day. This leaves them short of
persons and places to take care of their children while the parents
work in the fields.
According to the globalization, many people and
their children are now facing an economic crisis. Some farming families
find themselves in substantial debt. In the struggle against poverty,
these rural poor look for employment outside farming to earn money
in the factories or tourist areas which are nearby their communities.
Some poor families send their women and children to work in the beer-bars,
restaurants, brothels or motel rooms. Some of their children are left
uneducated at home at an early age until they grow up and become victims
of sex exploitation. One method to combat this problem is provide
education to the people, starting from pre- school and leading up
to vocational training. The YMCA hopes to provide the people with
the education to better their situation and remain in their communities.
The pre-school would be a link in the chain.
Objectives
1. To give opportunity to the poor families in Dokkamtai and other
nearby villages to have their children begin to receive an education
at an early age.
2. to provide quality child care while parents work in the field.
3. To enhance opportunities for learning readiness skill for children
which will prepare them for continuity into grade 1.
4. To alleviate malnutrition.
Activities
Due to the fact that the basic school curriculum is adequate but not
broad enough to fully develop the inquiring minds of children, the
YMCA has cooperated with the Children's House in Hawaii since 1986
to provide a pre-school teacher training program and set-up the curriculum
that is based on the Christian Montessori system and has that been
used in its other schools.
The curriculum is designed to be suitable for children in each community
and based on the application of scripture knowledge and local culture.
